I became involved with the BRIDGE Communication app in May 2021 when I was asked to help an 87 year old mom find an app to help her 54 year old nonverbal son to communicate. Her son was able to read, but due to a muscle/weakened bone condition, was unable to write or type. He uses some signs to communicate. After searching the internet and trying out some other apps, I stumbled upon the BRIDGE Communication app and ended up on a zoom meet with app creator Danielle Poletti. I think the app is exceptional. My first step was to remove all the pages and start with blank pages (beginning December 2021 a new app, the BRIDGE COMMUNICATION BUILDER APP has been made available, which comes with BLANK BOARDS). From there, I built a customized set of boards for the 54 year old. His boards included greetings and requests that he would routinely make at home, in the community at restaurants, stores, and other places he visits. His boards also included photos of his large family (he is the youngest of 7 children), their homes, and places they go to together. I also added some 2-STEP DAD JOKES that he could tell at family gatherings, as well as FUN WAYS TO SAY HI and FUN WAYS TO SAY BYE BOARDS (these boards can now be purchased in the BRIDGE COMMUNICATION APP’s IN-APP STORE).

Screenshots of line drawings of signs that were uploaded to my camera roll, and added to the tiles of the app.
More line drawings of signs. This was the first set of boards I created. I discovered later that instead of the “more choices” tile, an additional page can be added from the menu, changing the red “X” to a green arrow that takes you to your added page.
Preferred non-restaurant foods. This was the first board set I made. I later found out that instead of the “more choices” tile, an additional page can be added from the menu, changing the red “X” to a green arrow that takes you to your added page.
Preferred restaurants, added as GROUPS, under which have images of preferred foods on tiles for each restaurant.
Preferred activities. I later found out that instead of the “more choices” tile, an additional page can be added from the menu, changing the red “X” to a green arrow that takes you to your added page.

People. Family and Non-Family were added as “GROUPS.”
These are the tiles that are under the FAMILY tile. Photos of family members can be viewed under each tile.
Places this individual routinely goes to. The “more choices” tile can be eliminated by going to the settings menu and adding a page. This will turn the red “X” to a green arrow, which when pressed, takes you to your added page.

Using the HIDE/SHOW feature from the settings menu, tiles can be darkened to simplify a board. The field of 8 can be reduced to meet the needs of the user. In this student’s case, through talking with the father, this board set was created.
